Joomchi Technique

Joomchi originally means making a Joomoney(pouch in English). Joomchi is the unique Korean traditional way of making a crumpled paper by joining layers of Hanji. Joomchi Hanji is a special paper that is transformed from Hanji, which is made by beating, rubbing, squeezing, agitating with the hands and water until the fibers adhere to each other in a single sheet.

줌치는 원래 주머니를 만드는 것을 뜻합니다.줌치는 한지를 겹겹이 붙여 구겨진 종이를 만드는 한국 고유의 전통 방식입니다. 줌치한지는 손과 물로 치고, 문지르고, 짜고, 휘저어 섬유질이 한 장의 시트로 서로 붙을 때까지 만든 본래 한지를 변형시킨 특수한지입니다.

Joomchi Hanji used for Joomchi pen case was made by Hanji craftsman, Shin Hyun Se. He has more than 50 years of experience in the field, began to learn papermaking from his 16-year-old. Since the establishment of Shin Hyun Se Hanji studio in 2002, he has been producing preservation paper mainly for custom orders. Shin’s Hanji has provided to over 40 domestic and foreign professional institutions, such as the National Archives, the US Library of Congress and the US National Archives.

줌치펜케이스에 쓰인 줌치한지는 한지공예가 신현세 장인이 제작하였습니다. 그는 이 분야에서 16세 때부터 한지 만들기를 배우기 시작하여 50년 이상의 경력이 있습니다. 2002년 신현세 한지공방을 설립한 이후, 주로 주문제작 보존지를 생산하고 있습니다. 장인의 한지는 국립문서보관소, 미 의회도서관, 미국 국립문서보관소 등 국내외 40여개 전문기관에 쓰이고 있습니다.

Jo Hyun jin Hanji Research Institute mainly works on secondary processing to increase the use and functionality of Hanji. While working for 30 years at the National Forest Research Institute, Dr. Jo studied the characteristics of Hanji. In particular, he researches on functional hanji, such as natural dyed and lacquered hanji, and manufactures dyed hanji using natural materials such as sappan, cape jasmine, indigo, redroot gromwell, lac, and amur cork tree.

조현진 한지연구소는 한지의 활용도와 기능성을 높이기 위한 2차가공을 주로 하고 있습니다. 조현진박사는 국립산림과학원에서 30여년간 근무하면서 한지의 특성을 연구하였습니다. 특히 천연염색한지, 옻칠한 한지 등 기능성 한지를 연구하고 있으며, 사판, 케이프자스민, 인디고, 레드루트 그롬웰, 락, 아무르코르크나무 등의 천연재료를 이용한 염색한지를 제조하고 있습니다.
